About Scott Joplin

The 'King of Ragtime,' Scott Joplin, admired in his own time as today for his mastery of the piano rag, was unable during his lifetime to raise any interest in the production of his operas, the first of which, A Guest of Honor, is lost. He expended much of his own money on promoting his two stage works, but his surviving opera, Treemonisha, did not recieve a professional performance until 1975.
