On a balcony during a party, a wealthy but vulgar bachelor informs a young women that her family expects them to marry. Offended by his offhand proposal, the woman refuses. During their argument, each learns that the other has loved and lost. The man confesses that he wants to marry simply to avoid breach of promise suits, and offers to wed anyone the woman recommends. She pretends to tell him about a friend who has been deserted by her lover, but he understands that she is speaking of herself, and they leave the balcony planning their honeymoon together.
