An important figure in American musical education and the promotion of
American music, Moore is one of the few American composers best known for
his operas. His The Ballad of Baby Doe is, along with the
similarly folk-influenced Susannah of Carlisle Floyd, one of only two American operas
of its era to find a solid place in the operatic repertory.
